Bachmann Europe Plc has fitted a Next 18 DCC decoder socket to the new chassis due to be introduced shortly underneath the LNER V1/V3 2-6-2T locomotives. These will be the first British outline locomotives to feature this new standard of socket.
Next 18 is used by a number of European model manufacturers including our German company Liliput. The European Standards are set by NEM (Normen Europäischer Modellbahnen (German), Normas Europeas de Modelismo (Spanish) or Normes Européennes de Modélisme (French) who set the standards on behalf of MOROP (The European Union of Model Railroad and Railroad fans).
The new decoder offers a number of advantages over other types notably:
o Its compact layout and small size (15mm long and 9.5mm wide) is similar in size to the existing 6PIN decoder. However, it removes the need for the pins sticking out which can easily be bent and is therefore smaller overall than the 6PIN type.
o It avoids the need to solder speaker wires or auxiliary function wires to the decoder.
o It offers greater flexibility over previous types.
Next 18 is a standard (MOROP / NEM 662) and not a brand and is supported by most of the European decoder suppliers. Bachmann will be introducing a Next 18 decoder into its range of DCC decoders shortly (36-567).
